Theme: ”THE LITTLE MERMAID”

“Katrina 2025 centres around the world of fairy tales where anything is possible!”

In “The Little Mermaid”, the famous fairy tale by HC Andersen, a mermaid falls in love with the prince whose life she saves. She sacrifices her beautiful voice and becomes mute in exchange for human legs, but she fails to make the prince fall in love with her and so must return to the sea as white foam.

Several composers have been inspired by this tale and the fate of the mermaid. Even more have composed music with water as their muse, taking inspiration from the storms of the sea, mirror-like surfaces, and perhaps the silence beneath.
Music is of course made up of sound, but silence is just as important in the context. Silence will be heard(!) in John Cage’s famous work “4.33” with pianist Emil Holmström as well as in Gubaidulina’s “Silenzio” with, among others, Joël Marosi on cello and Janne Rättyä on accordion.
